Vasco Giovagnetti, Associate Editor

New Content ItemVasco has significant interdisciplinary research experience in algal-plant biology and microbiology. He holds BSc and MSc degrees in Marine Biology from the Università Politecnica delle Marche (Ancona, Italy), and a PhD in Marine Sciences and Engineering from the Università degli studi di Napoli ‘Federico II’ and Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn, Napoli (Italy). After graduating, Vasco was a postdoctoral research assistant for 10 years, spending 8 years as a Leverhulme Trust postdoctoral researcher in the Biochemistry Department at Queen Mary University of London (UK). Over the years, he mainly studied the working principles, design and molecular mechanisms of photosynthesis regulation in algae and plants. Vasco joined the BMC Series in October 2022 as Associate Editor for BMC Plant Biology, BMC Microbiology and BMC Biotechnology. He is based in the Springer Nature’s London office.

David Alvarez-Ponce, Senior Editorial Board Member

New Content ItemDr. David Alvarez-Ponce is an Associate Professor at the University of Nevada, Reno. He received his PhD in Genetics from the University of Barcelona in 2010, and was a postdoctoral researcher at the Maynooth University, Trinity College Dublin, and the Institute for Plant Molecular and Cell Biology (Spain). He uses bioinformatics methods to compare the genomes of different organisms and learn about the evolution of their genes, and how this evolution is shaped by natural selection. Foci of his lab include understanding why certain proteins evolve faster than others, the evolution of molecular networks, and the evolution of methylomes. He joined the Editorial board of BMC Plant Biology as a Section Editor in April 2019 and is currently a Senior Editorial Board Member.

Fabrizio Costa, Senior Editorial Board Member

New Content ItemFabrizio Costa is an Associate Professor of Plant Genetics and Breeding of horticultural fruit crops at the University of Trento. He has actively participated in national and European projects and authored several publications in various journals of scientific relevance. The research activity of Fabrizio Costa is focused on the genetic analysis of fruit ripening processes and quality aspects using different QTL mapping strategies and transcriptomic approaches. The comprehensive dissection of complex traits through system genetics has also been employed in the design of functional markers based on candidate genes to guide breeding programs towards the selection of novel accession distinguished by superior quality. Dr. Costa joined the BMC Plant Biology editorial board in April 2012  as an Associate Editor then Section Editor from February 2016 and finally Senior Board Member in 2020.

New Content ItemGoetz Hensel is a molecular biologist by training holding a PhD from the University of Braunschweig. Currently, he leads the Centre of Plant Genome Engineering at Heinrich-Heine University Düsseldorf, Germany. His research interests include Agrobacterium-mediated gene transfer methods of cereals and targeted genome modifications using custom endonucleases such as clustered regularly-interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR/Cas). Furthermore, he is interested in the production of pharmaceuticals in plants (molecular farming). He has published ca 100 research papers and several book chapters with various publishers. Goetz Hensel has been serving as a Senior Editorial Board Member for since 2020.

New Content ItemJin Xu is a Professor of Plant physiology and molecular biology at the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The aims of the group are to investigate the physiological and molecular mechanisms underlying the trace element uptake and accumulation in plants, and the root system development in responses to micronutrients, rare earth elements and root exudates. Prof. Xu's In the long-term this research will (1) aid in the development of cost-effective, sustainable agricultural strategies for vegetables and crop breeding and cultivation, and will provide insight into novel applications of micronutrients; (2) provide insights into the development of a root system necessary for plant adaptation by using micronutrients and rare earth elements; (3) explore the molecular mechanisms of low Cd-accumulation and provide insight regarding novel strategies that can be used for phytoremediation and food safety. Prof. Xu has been a Senior Editorial Board Member for since 2020.

New Content ItemJorge is an Associate Professor at the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina and a Principal Investigator at the Institute of Genetic Engineering and Molecular Biology “Dr. Héctor N. Torres” (INGEBI, CONICET), Buenos Aires, Argentina. He got his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1991. He then trained as a post-doctoral scholar at the Plant Gene Expression Center – University of California at Berkeley (Sheila McCormick’s lab), United States, from 1992-1996.

His lab uses Arabidopsis and tomato as model systems to study the genetic and molecular mechanisms that control pollen pistil interactions and plant fertilization. His lab focuses on the biochemical and physiological events that take place in the pollen tube during his journey towards the accomplishment of double fertilization of the female gametophyte.

Jorge joined the Editorial Board of BMC Plant Biology in 2011 and has been a Senior Board Member since 2020.

Nicola Busatto, Senior Editorial Board Member

New Content ItemNicola Busatto obtained in 2012 his PhD at the University of Padua in Plant Biotechnology studying the molecular dynamics governing the ripening process in climacteric fruits (peach and tomato) and investigating the role of hormone crosstalk in the regulation of such physiology by means of a functional genomic approach. From 2016, he has been working as researcher at the “Research and Innovation Center - Foundation Edmund Mach (Italy)” in the “Fruit Crop Genomics and Breeding” group. His efforts are focused in unraveling the genomic and molecular basis that underlie the fruit ripening dynamics and quality traits to develop improved apple cultivars and assist traditional breeding programs. A particular interest is devoted to the comprehension of the molecular mechanisms involved in the physiological disorders correlated to the cold storage and post-harvest stage. His research interests span ripening physiology in different model systems, hormone regulation and functions, abiotic stress responses, transcriptional regulations, fleshy fruit development and evolution. Nicola has been a Senior Editorial Board Member for BMC Plant Biology since 2020.

Paul completed his undergraduate degree and an MSc at the University of Auckland in New Zealand investigating the causes of browning in apples.  He then moved to Adelaide, Australia to take up a PhD scholarship studying the production of anthocyanin pigments in grape berry skins.  Following this, Paul worked at CSIRO to investigate inflorescence formation in grapes.  This interest in flowering and molecular genetics lead Dr Boss to the John Innes Centre in Norwich, England where he worked on flowering in the model plant Arabidopsis.  In 2004, Paul returned to Adelaide to lead a research group at CSIRO investigating flavour and aroma development in grape berries, with a particular interest in the link between grape secondary metabolism and wine flavour and aroma. His current research activities bring together the disciplines of analytical chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology and genetics to understand the impact of environment, management and genotype on grape secondary metabolism. Paul joined a journal as a Section Editor and is currently a Senior Editorial Board Member since 2020.    

Pradeep Kachroo, Senior Editorial Board Member

New Content ItemProf. Pradeep Kachroo was born in India, where he received his B.S. degree at the University of Delhi in 1987 and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees at the University of Baroda in 1989 and 1995. A portion of his dissertation research was conducted at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, through a graduate fellowship from the Rockefeller Foundation. He then moved to be a post-doctoral scholar at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich, the Waksman Institute of Microbiology at Rutgers University, and the Boyce Thompson Institute at Cornell University. He joined the faculty of the University of Kentucky in the Department of Plant Pathology in 2002, where since 2013, he is a full professor. His work has significantly contributed to our understanding of Signalling pathways regulating host-pathogen interaction. His group uses Arabidopsis as a host model and to study molecular, genetic and biochemical mechanisms governing response to infection by various different microorganisms. His work made multiple advances that are foundational to our understanding of plant disease resistance. He is a recipient of the Noel T. Keen Award for Research Excellence in Molecular Plant Pathology. University of Kentucky in the Department of Plant Pathology in 2013. He joined the Editorial board of BMC Plant Biology in 2009, became a Section Editor for the ‘Plant-Biotic Interaction’ Section and currently is a Senior Editorial Board Member of the journal since 2020. 

Yuling Bai, Senior Editorial Board Member

New Content ItemDr. Yuling Bai, professor working at Plant Breeding, Plant Science Department of Wageningen University & Research in the Netherlands. Since 2007 she has been leading the research group of “Breeding for Resistance”, with the aim to develop breeding strategies for durable resistance in different crops. The research focuses on the understanding of genetic and molecular mechanisms underlying disease resistances in vegetable crops against pathogens. Various genetic and genomics approaches are exploited to discover novel plant resistance and susceptibility genes and to study their interaction with the corresponding pathogens. The strong point in her research is its translational feature: overarching strategically the fundamental research to applied breeding practices. Her research has resulted in many publication in scientific Journals with high impact factors and also led to great impact in breeding practice by developing novel breeding strategies, tools and prebreeding plant materials. She is associate/senior editor for several scientific Journals and Chairperson of the Vegetable Section of EUCAPIA (European Association for Research on Plant Breeding). Dr. Yuling Bai joined the BMC Plant Biology editorial board as an associated Editor several years ago, became a Section Editor in June 2019 and has been a Senior Editorial Board Member since 2020.
