Comparative timing of induction of programmed cell death in P. viticola-infected leaves of different resistant genotypes. Leaf discs were infected with avrRpv+. A PCD is first observed after 8 hpi in Rpv12- (´Fleurtai´) and Rpv12/Rpv3- (´Sauvignac´) genotypes, after 12 hpi in Rpv10- (´Muscaris´) and after 28 hpi in Rpv3- (´Regent´) genotypes. Yellow asterisks indicate trypan blue stained cells showing cell death, st, stomata outlined with dashed line in red; z, encysted zoospore marked with a white arrow. Scale bar correspond to 20 μm. B Area of PCD after 6 dpi. Scale bar correspond to 200 μm. Images are representative of three biological replicates and three independent experiment. C Area of cell death in mm2 after 6 dpi. Bars represent the average of five independent measurements. Error bars show standard deviation. ANOVA and Tukey’s HSD (Honestly Significant Difference) test were used to compare the cell death area between the different genotypes. Means with different letters (A,B) are significantly different (p < 0.05)
