The evolutionary distance is shown on the left of the upper panel, with Viridiplantae representing all plants, and extending down into deeper evolutionary distances. For example, Arabidopsis is part of the Rosid clade and maize (Zea mays) is part of the Grass clade. The individual genes whose promoters were examined are shown in the lower panel, and the grey shading in cells indicates the breadth of their representation in plants. The number of genes similar to the gene whose promoter was characterized in that plant species is shown by the number in the box.
