From: Plant neighbor identity influences plant biochemistry and physiology related to defense
Total phenolics accumulation and plant biomass in greenhouse experiment. Centaurea maculosa plants were paired with either a conspecific (C. maculosa; C) or heterospecific (F. idahoensis; F) neighbor and grown in high or low nutrient conditions in the greenhouse. Half of the plant pairs in each nutrient condition were elicited with MeJA (+MeJA) to simulate herbivory. Panel a: Accumulation of total phenolics was analyzed in C. maculosa leaf tissues using the Folin-Ciocalteu method, values are expressed as mg gallic acid equivalents (GAE) per gram dry weight of plant tissue.
