Phenotypic variation in leaf size and shape among parents and progeny in three RIL mapping populations. The female parents, Williams 82, Enrei and Bogao had a leaf length/width ratio of ~ 1.5, while the male parents, Dongnong50 (DN50), Suinong 14 (SN14) and Nannong 94–156 (NN94156) had a ratio of ~ 3.0. The segregating progeny exhibit transgressive segregation in leaf length/width ratio, as this ratio ranged from about 0.95 to 4.32
