Scheme of mode of action for SU gametocides (modified from Liu et al., 2017). Exposure to TBM causes inhibition of ALS enzymes, metabolic detoxification, and metabolic replenishment. Inhibition of ALS activity disturbs amino acid metabolism and then destroys plastids and chloroplasts. Then, the expression of some tapetum preferential genes and the synthesis of lipids, flavonoids, and pollen coat materials is affected. Consequently, photosynthesis, energy and nutrition supply, cell division and development, and protein metabolism are all influenced by the treatment
