Maize HXKs are localized in the mitochondria and the cytosol. Zeta-projection images of protoplasts from A. thaliana transformed with the full version of (a) ZmHXK4, (b) ZmHXK5, (c) ZmHXK6, (d) ZmHXK9, (e) ZmHXK7, (f) ZmHXK8 translationally fused at the GFP carboxy-terminus are shown. As a reference, the fluorescence of GFP alone (h) and AtHXK1 fused at GFP (g) are shown. Mitotracker was used as mitochondrial marker, and it is shown in red; chlorophyll autofluorescence was used as marker of plastid localization and it is shown in blue.
