Model of selective suppression of host defense by different pathogens in two Triticeae species. Adapted and non-adapted isolates of different pathogen genera evoke a similar transcriptional re-programming in wheat and barley. Different parts of this general response are selectively suppressed by the adapted isolates. This results in a specific differential regulation between host and respective nonhost interactions. Although the outcome of defense reactions against the different pathogens is convergent, also in wheat and barley, they are differently effective against the individual isolates (adapted from [19])
