Accretion of NDH complexity through streptophyte evolution. Plotted at the nodes are novel genes that have no known homologue in extant cyanobacteria. Gene acquisitions were placed at the node to indicate first appearance regardless of putative, subsequent losses. Note that the PnsB3 transcript was detected in one species among the three Chlorophyta included (Additional file 1).
