Disease progression of M. oryzae on ABA-treated barley plants. Seven day old primary leaves of barley cultivar Ingrid were sprayed either with abscisic acid solution (20 μM) or mock-solution and inoculated one hour later with M. oryzae isolate TH6772 (200,000 conidia mL−1). At 48 and 72 h p.i. leaves were harvested for microscopic analysis and plant-fungus interaction sites were assigned to categories shown in Figure 1. Bars represent mean and standard deviation of four leaves with at least 100 interaction sites analysed per leaf. Significant differences as determined by t-test (p ≤ 0.05) are marked with asterisks. The experiment was repeated twice with similar results.
