To define the cell plate configuration from a cross-section (upper images) of an FM4-64-labelled cell plate, a binary image (lower images) was obtained by intensity thresholding. From the binary image, the cell plate area and perimeter were measured. Complexity was calculated from the area and perimeter (see Methods for details).
