  1. Four-week-old cucumber plants (with two true fully expanded leaves) were sprayed with H2O, 10 μM BTH, 50 μM BTH or left untreated. The third true leaf was infected with C. lagenarium 7 days later (ten infection sites per leaf). The percentages of spreading lesions (i.e. lesions showing a larger size than the initial inoculated area) observed 2 weeks after inoculation with C. lagenarium were calculated on the basis of 18 plants/treatment (experiment 1) and 17 plants/treatment (experiment 2) (means +/- standard deviations).
