The 116 maize NAC proteins were extracted from the published B73 genome sequence as described in the text and are numbered according to position in the genome (starting with the short arm of chromosome I, see Additional file 1: Table S1). Bootstrap values are indicated at the nodes, the bar at the bottom of the figure depicts the distance scale for branch length. Proteins with identical C-terminal motifs were labelled with the brackets and the respective motif’s number was given (see Additional file 3: Table S2).
