Bearing style and flower bud differentiation in Ficus carica L. (A) Fig fruit (‘Houraishi’) production in Japan. The broken arrow indicates the period when inflorescences differentiate but most resulting fruits drop or decay because of winter low temperature. (B) First-crop fruits differentiate at nodes near the tip of 2-year-old pre-fruit-bearing branches (black arrows) and second-crop fruits differentiate at nodes near the base of 1-year-old fruit-bearing branches (white arrows). Inflorescences differentiate sequentially from lower nodes as a 1-year-old fruit-bearing branch develops.
