Correlation of ¹O ₂ production and GPXH expression. Singlet oxygen production was measured with SOSG in each of the 20 gox mutants during short-term exposure to HL (500 μmol photons m^-2 s^-1 for 15 min), and was plotted against GPXH expression of the corresponding mutant grown either under (A) ML- (80 μmol photons m^-2 s^-1) or (B) HL-condition (250 μmol photons m^-2 s^-1). This revealed that ¹O₂ production in the mutants positively correlates with GPXH expression under HL- (R² = 0.48) but not ML-conditions (R² = 0.04). The production of ¹O₂ was calculated for each mutant from five and GPXH expression from three independent experiments (average ± SE), and normalized to the corresponding level of the wild-type strain (grey dashed lines).
